I recently signed up for a sipgate base account. If you choose the basic tarif you can get a free landline number without paying anything, as long you don't use it to call out. This handy for people with have a phone flat to call landline phones.

Sipgate uses standard SIP technology to forward calls to VoIP clients. Hence you can actually use it with any client soft- and hardware supporting SIP (s.th. which wouldn't be possible with Skype). Sipgate has a own windows client you can use if you use windows, which is already pre-configured for the use with sipgate. If you use other plattforms you have to set it up yourself.
For Linux there are two major SIP apps. One is Ekiga* and one is Empathy (relying on the telepathy framework). If you want to use Empathy for SIP, you should first install the telepathy-sofiasip package from the repository. Otherwise nothing happens when you add a new SIP account.

In debian based Distros just use: apt-get install telepathy-sofiasip

After that you can just add a new SIP account with Empathy, using your details from the login area of sipgate.

I just saw that a the roadmap for the GNOME 2.2 relases is out. There are many good improvements on the list. So, if you are a GNOME user it's really woth a look.

Another good news is, that Ekiga (VoIP client) is finally getting a nice GUI with a proper contact list. So it will offer more usability than the ancient GnomeMeeting look. The new GUI will be first used in Ekiga 3.0.

So we can expect nice things to happen in the near future. GNOME 2.20 will come out on the 19th of September (according to the schedule), including the version 3.0 of Ekiga.

Persönlich war ich ja noch nie ein großer Fan von Skype. Leider ist es derzeit ja ein quasi Standard zum telefonieren am Rechner. Das liegt unter anderem daran das es derzeit sehr wenig plausible Alternativen gibt. SIP lässt sich zwar benutzen, ist aber auch nicht wirklich sicher und einfach einzurichten. Daher ist es wohl eher nichts für die Masse. Daher verwende auch ich Skype ab und an. Nun geht es aber langsam zu weit mit Skype. Da sich Skype inzwischen bis zum BIOS vorbeist und alles unternimmt das keiner weiß was es tut, grentzt es schon an ein Wagnis diese Software, zumindest unter Windows zu verwenden.

Es gibt anscheinend Leute die sich über Skype™ beschweren. Ich würde einfach eine andere Software zum telefonieren nehmen. Etwa eine die kein proprietäres Protokoll verwendet, so dass man seinen Festnetzprovider frei wählen kann. Im Moment ist eigentlich SIP der Standard, der am verbreitetsten ist. Über weitere Gründe Skype & Co nicht zu verwenden habe ich mich ja schonmal ausgelassen.

Die VoIP Software Skype erfreut sich anhaltender Beliebtheit. So verlockend die Benutzung von Skype auch sein mag, es gibt genügend alternativen zu VoIP. Zwar macht Skype einem das telefonieren über das Internet wirklich einfach, so muss man z.B. kein Router oder Telefonanlage konfigurieren, doch sollte man sich im klaren sein, dass Skype hier sein eigenes Süppchen kocht. Es dürfte bekannt sein das Skype sein eigenes proprietäres Protokoll verwendet und somit zu allen vorhandenen Standards inkompatibel ist. Das bedeutet auch, niemand weiß so recht, was Skype eigentlich macht, bzw. wie es genau funktioniert. Des weiteren ist man immer auf den original-Client angewiesen. Der nur unter Windows richtig funktioniert. Die Linux-Variante verwendet z.B. OSS als Soundsytem und verwendet damit veraltete Technik, die man wohl auf keiner aktuellen Linux-Installation mehr findet. Außerdem wirkt Skype einer Standardbildung im VoIP bereicht entgegen und verdrängt so offene Standards wie SIP & Co, so wie das ICQ, MSN und Yahoo! im Instant Messaging bereich gemacht haben. Ein Trend der wahrlich nicht zu unterstützen ist.

Man stelle sich vor, es wäre das gleiche bei Email. Ein Provider schreibt ein Email-Protokoll, das er geheim hält und das mit allen anderen Protokollen inkompatibel ist, aber alle verwenden dieses. Die Folge wäre, der gesamte Email-Verkehr läuft nur über diesen einen Provider, bzw. diese Emails sind nicht kompatibel zu anderen Providern. Nicht wirklich eine Idee, im Sinne des Internets. Deshalb weg von Skype, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo-Messenger! und Co, hin zu offenen Standards wie Jabber, SIP usw.
