Ubuntu Jaunty (9.10) has the nice new dark look for the status icons. But this is only working if you use the "Humanity-Dark" icon theme.

I wanted to have another icon theme, but keep the nice dark status icons. So I had a look at the Humanity-Dark icon folder in /usr/share/icons/ and discovered, that this is only an overlay of the normal Humanity icon theme. So this overlay could be used for my favourite icon theme as well. So I just made a copy of the Humanity-Dark folder (if you want to make a new folder in /usr/share/icons you have to be root of course) and changed the name of the new folder to Colors-Dark (because I want to inherit from the gnome colors theme). In the Colors-Dark folder you have to modify the index.theme file, to use another theme than the Humanity one. First you should change the name to avoid confusion. For example Name=Colors-Dark. After that the important part comes: change the inherit value to your prefered icon theme. For example Inherits=gnome-wise if you want to use gnome wise. That's already everything you have to do. If there is any icon-cache file you better remove and recreate it. You can use gtk-update-icon-cache to create a new cache. Now you have your nice new icons being used, when you choose the Colors-Dark theme, but the dark ubuntu-icons stay.

Nachdem ich seit ca. zwei Wochen im Besitz eines Netbooks bin, möchte ich auch hier mal über meine Erfahrungen berichten. Besonders auch zu Betriebssystemen die sich für solche Rechner anbieten.

Hardware:
Ich habe mich für ein Eee-PC Modell von ASUS entschieden. Nach einiger Recherche scheint wohl das Modell 1005HA-M das mit derzeit bestem Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis zu sein. Nachdem dessen knapper Vogänger plötzlich nichtmehr verfügbar war, habe ich dann dieses Modell erstanden, dass trotz Windows-XP™ Lizenz auch günstiger war. Außerdem hat das M-Modell einen matten Bildschirm (also auch für draußen geeignet), eine lange Akkulaufzeit (angeblich 8Std.) und eine angenehme Größe, so dass man noch gut drauf tippen kann.
Nach ca. 2-wöchiger Benutzung bin ich eigentlich auch ganz Zufrieden mit der Hardware, auch wenn der Akku eigentlich noch nie 8 Stunden durchgehalten hat, hält er doch einen Uni-Tag ohne Netzteil durch.
Note: Der Rechner wird zwar nur mit Windows ausgeliefert, alle Komponenten funktionieren aber problemlos mit Linux (inkl. WLAN und Webcam).

Software:
Mein erster Versuch, dem ich natürlich nicht wiederstehen konnte, war gleich mal die aktuelle Version des Moblin-Systems zu installieren. Das zwar stark optimierte Mobil-Betriebsystem ist allerdings noch nicht wirklich ausgereift.
Ein paar gute Ideen sind schon umgesetzt, aber die ziehen sich auch nicht stringent durch und außerdem hängt sich die Oberfläche regelmäßig auf. Für die richtigen Computeraufgaben muss man dann doch immer wieder die Moblin-typische Oberfläche verlassen. Von dem her kann man es dann auch gleich ganz lassen.
Daher musste Moblin nach ein paar Tagen dem Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) weichen. Da habe ich mich allerdings zur unstable Version überreden lassen, die im Wiki als beste Version angeboten wird. Das Relases basiert demnach schon auf Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10), dass ja angeblich schneller wie alle Vorgänger booten soll. Aber just der UNR bootet eine halbe Ewigkeit. Nach dem Login kommt gleich nochmal ein Ladebalken und erst dann erscheint der Dekstop.
Auch bei UNR gibt es also noch viel Optimierungsbedarf. Die Stabilität ist bisher auch noch durchwachsen, was sich aber hoffentlich bis zum Final-Release von 9.10 bessern wird. Der Ruheztustand und das interne Micro funktionieren mit Ubuntu auch (noch) nicht richtig. Ansonsten gefällt mir der Desktopaufbau von UNR schon ganz gut.
Das angepasste Dektop-Menü (Go Home Applet), lässt sich theoretisch auch auf anderen Distris installieren. Ich bin daher gerade ernsthaft am überlegen meinem Laptop einen schlankeren Unterbau zu verpassen, also z.B. Gentoo zu installieren und dieses mit der Netbook-Remix Zusammenstellung als Oberfläche zu versehen. Gibt es da eigentlich schon fertige Pakete?

Fazit: Es tut sich gerade zwar viel bei den Netbook spezifischen Linux-Distris, der Markt ist allerdings noch zu Jung um ausgereifte Lösungen zu bieten.

A new version of GNOME-Do was just released a few days ago. I already tried it and the new Docky is quite a nice idea. Docky is the new big feature in Do, which offers a panel with starters on it. It's already quite nice to use, and almost ready for productive use. If you already like Do you should give it a try! There are already packages for most Linux-Distros, even a repository for Ubuntu. Have fun!

Note: You have to resart the Do-Deamon before the new features are available.

Pidgin ist ja eigentlich schon dafür bekannt, dass es so viele IM-Protokolle unterstützt. Allerdings fehlen von Hause aus noch das Facebook und das Skype-Protokoll. Beide können aber recht einfach nachgerüstet werden.
Das Facebook-Protokoll lässt sich einfach mit einem Plugin aktivieren und danach wie jedes andere Protokoll benutzen.
Bei Skype gibt es natürlich die entsprechenden Einschränkungen. Es wird selbstverständlich nur das Chatten unterstützt und Skype muss auch trotzdem gestartet sein, um dessen Infrastruktur über die Skype-API oder über Dbus zu nutzen. Aber immerhin hat man dann wenigstens nur einen Client, um wirklich alle Buddies zu verwalten. Und das ist ja schließlich auch schonmal ein großer Gewinn. Zumindest solange bis alle Jabber/XMPP verwenden (SCNR).

After I installed Foresight-Linux on my old Laptop today, to take a look at the new GNOME 2.22, I could also get a glimpse on the new version of Banshee. The New Last.fm-Radio integration looked just great, though it seems not yet to be rock solid, in the 0.13.x release. After happily playing a bit with this feature, I already had discovered some nice new tracks.
Comming back to my normal computer and checking my newreader, I found out that other people are happy with that feature too and that there is already a new alpha release of Banshee. The release (1.0 Alpha 1) just came out today and is bringing even more great features. From the initial article I finally landed on the »official blog entry« and the release notes.
That all looks so great, that I think Banshee will be my default music-player, as soon the stable version of 1.0 is out. They finally implemented the new Artist/Album browser, I always missed too. I also learned today that the search-field in Banshee is much more powerful than I would have guessed.
So, better to stay tuned on the music player issue, Rhythmbox is finally getting some serious competitors...

Since yesterday I have the very bleeding edge version of Rhythmbox on my Computer [Screenshot]. I have to admit that there are some nice GUI modifications, that have been made since the last version I have seen. Rhythmbox was the Music-Player and Tool which could convince me most so far. Actually I am using Rhythmbox from it's very beginning and tried already many other music players too. But somehow I always came back to Rhythmbox, because it developed to exactly what I expect of a todays music player.
It's not overloaded, as AmaroK for example and has a clear GUI. It has become also very stable recently and does everything a user needs, including a growing number of useful plugins. Also the way tracks are organized satisfied me more, than in all the other players I have seen so far.
So I really have to say thank you to the developers of Rhytmbox. Thank you, that you made dealing with digital music a more convinient thing!
